Scholarships
|
Although the Kiwanis Sunrisers of Anacortes support over 30 community organizations, our primary mission is to focus on the needs of the children of our community. We do this by contributing directly to our school system in support of programs designed by school staffs to meet classroom needs, by supporting youth programs such as the Boys and Girls Club, and by offering scholarships to deserving Anacortes young people.
|
In 2017, for the 38th consecutive year, the Sunriseres awarded scholarships to 15 graduating high school seniors at Anacortes High School and 2 scholarships to previously awarded graduates who were returning for their second year of collegiate studies.
As in the past, their scholarships are made possible by citizens and community business's great support of the Kiwanis Sunriser's fundraising efforts, including sales of "Passport to Savings" coupon books, Christmas trees, and food wagon items.
Scholarships are typically awarded to students who have demonstrated a combination of outstanding academic work, service to the community, and leadership in school activities. Personal development, planning, and financial need will also be factors.

Student of the Month
Every month, teachers or administrators from the various local schools recommend a student who is doing such a great job that they deserve special recognition for their outstanding effort. We, the Kiwanis Sunrisers, invite these students and their families to our breakfast meetings and have them speak with us about their plans for the future. Then we award them with a plaque and a $100 gift certificate to our local book store. This program is very popular with the local schools.
